Abita Mystery House UCM Museum

on

I’m confident in saying that this is by far the most interesting and unique museum I’ve ever been to. Near the center of Abita Springs off Hwy 36, the Abita Mystery House holds just about everything you never knew you wanted to see. Full of folk art, push-button animated displays, unusual artifacts, and just plain fun/weird stuff, you can easily spend an entire afternoon soaking it all in.

The Abita Mystery House, also called the UCM Museum (You see ’em?), is a roadside attraction on a whole new level. I’ve been there 3 times, and each time I see new things. Since I am a lover of all things miniature and dioramas, I am partial the the hall of push-button animations. You can catch a Mardi Gras parade, second line procession, and more. There’s so much to look at, including some questionable taxidermy throughout. You can’t miss Buford the Bassigator. Is it a fish or reptile? Who knows? Darrel the Dogigator has a similar story. You’ll also see an Airstream crashed by an UFO and a bathroom covered in mosaic. And there’s…well, you’ll have to see it for yourself!

It’s $3 to see the museum (price may be subject to change). And don’t forget to check out the gift shop; it’s just as interesting as the museum.
