Flying Dolly’s (formerly Just Chillin’)

Dine indoors or outside (old photo)

I firmly believe Snoballs are a food group, at least in the summer in the South they are. And I consider myself somewhat of a Snoball connoisseur having done decades of taste-testing research. There is a science to making the perfect Snoball. Sometimes they’re topped flat, sometimes rounded. Sometimes they have crunchy ice, sometimes it’s smoother. Sometimes they come “stuffed” (with ice cream). Sometimes they come with a spoon, but most often it’s a spoon/straw hybrid sort of thing. Sometimes they are spelled Snoball or Snowball, and sometimes they’re called Snow Cones. Whichever moniker you prefer, they are THE perfect treat during a scorching Louisiana summer. I scouted several places in Mandeville, and the first place I visited for a sugary-syrup iced concoction is Just Chillin’ (new name Flying Dolly’s). You can order and eat inside or outside.

There are so many flavors to try! It’s too bad Snoball stands don’t usually offer a tasting sampler, like little Snoball shots. (Hey….<–that’s a good business idea!)

My favorite flavors are cantaloupe and ice cream with cream (usually some kind of condensed milk drizzle topping). The color of the Snoball pictured above is green and represents the flavor Spearmint, which should be outlawed.

There is also a large selection of homemade ice cream for the lactose-tolerant. Daily, you can choose from about 30 different ice cream flavors. I want to try the Tchefuncte Turtle next, or maybe Honeycomb, or Creole Cream. They all look so good.

Beat the heat with a sweet treat. Visit them today at 3799 Hwy 22 next to Raising Cane’s. Check out their website at flyingdollys.com for prices and a full menu.
