I spent a weekend being entertained in Abita Springs. First, there was Bingo, then the Abita Brewery tour, and then Cajun Dancing on Saturday. Once again, I found myself in the Abita Springs town hall, but this time it was to see some 2-steppin’ and listen to Cajun music. Now, I’ve known my whole life that I can’t dance. I’ve accepted it gracefully. But if you like to do-si-do to some zydeco, this is the place for you. You need to have a dance partner to do most of the dances, however, I did see a group doing a line dance to the side later in the night.

One Saturday a month, the Northshore Cajun Dancers (Northshorecajundancers.com) teach a class from 7-7:30 pm. The lessons are free, and the dress code is casual. Food and drinks are available. There is usually a hot dish (pulled pork on the night I was there) and hot dogs, chili, snacks, sodas, beer, and wine available for purchase or by donation. Proceeds go to the Abita Trailhead Museum.

At about 7:45 pm, the lights dim and the band sets up. The entertainment and dancing after the lessons is $9/person. You can pay if you arrive early for the lessons and get a wristband. They have different music groups on rotation throughout the year. The band schedule is on their website and on their Facebook page (Northshore Cajun Dancers). (Dates/times/price are subject to change so check their site before you go.)
